Mark Goad

At the Marsh Today

Blue heron hunting for frogs
is the petroglyph come to life,
the one in Arizona on that rusty
flat rock etched a millennium back as
testimony and offering, a wisdom
generously shared. Praised be heron’s
elegance! we are agreed
                                        yet do not heed
his purpose, tireless and long-meant, awaiting
strange eyes patient to read a sign given
and extend so generous a grace
to a people not yet born.
