About Place Journal, Volume II Issue I
Trees

Vesper for KC

Standing in your Plaza
a tree begins to grow
at the base of my spine,
leaves sprout from my head
and head north, trying
to wrap themselves around the sky
as rain falls from the corner
of my eye. You, Autumn, know
how to woo a girl without roots.

Place a red leaf, size of my heart
in my mouth, alight on my tongue,
talk me into winter,
throw a fistful of please
at my feet. Let me skip
this crackling path home.

But as the sun falls, the wind
pushes me on and I know
where it wants me to go. West.
Back to my city, Desert Sister.
San Deciduous Trees, California,
Land of No Seasons and so
many reasons I sing not to follow.
