“and thou shalt make them drink of the river
of thy pleasures”
of thy pleasures”
—Psalms 36:8 (KJV)
I’ve known rivers as well:
The waterways which are the arteries of the Pine Belt.
My spirit lists like these rivers:
I learned to swim in the Leaf when I was a lad;
I plunged the Okotoma rapids as my adrenaline coursed;
I played ballads by the Singing River as the country couples rubbed belt-buckles;
My feet were set upon a rock beside the ole man Mississippi, while the Fast Eddies
gamboled and the fancy-ladies bathed in the whirlpools.
I’ve known rivers myself:
New world, light-wood, trot-line rivers.
I can survive on rivers.
