Hike over the Roots
Turtle me met a bird there in the tree under a fire-red mountain of leaves. Roots like teasing waves of wood hindered my need to watch. In the grass I climbed to the top of a root and noticed every rustle. Eye asked to find it. Show yourself, I said. Problem: Prove your presence. Yesterday I surprised a bird. Who are you?
My eye climbed to a sunset cloud of leaves below a burst of swaying feathers. Pattern wrote a map to follow in my bird book. Quiet daughter taught me to dream its imagined name: Melody of the Silent Ornament.
Spin Lombard started writing at a young age. Now 22, she has published poems in Thresholds Literary Journal, Four and Twenty, and Unshod Quills.
