CAT Scan
in a tube nose inches from white plastic
IV drip feels cold then like the need to pee
whirring table trundles
magnets’ clang announces each stop
pretend I’m in a spaceship
red and blue lights flash hydraulics hum
capsule clanks engines fire
gravity pulls me between bolsters
close my eyes
dream of that pine tree in the forlorn field
branches tent to the ground
mingle with clay
limbs canopy
the hollow like layers of lace
dry in pelting rain
I sleep on a pallet of needles
wait for a whisper to wake me
Richard H. Fox was born and bred in Worcester MA. He attended Webster University, as much artist colony as college, in the early 1970’s. These diverse cultures shaped his worldview and love of words. He is a former President of Poetry Oasis, Inc., a non-profit poetry association dedicated to education and promoting local poets, and was Managing Editor of its journal Diner. Richard has been published in numerous journals including Midstream Magazine, Concrete Wolf, Sahara, twist, and Soul-Lit. For the past year, many of his poems have focused on cancer from the patient’s point of view drawing on hope, humor, and unforeseen gifts. Richard seconds Stanley Kunitz’ motion that people in Worcester are “provoked to poetry.”
