The Lives lost, Lives maimed, and Lives sacrificed on June 3rd and 4th, 1989 in Tiananmen Square will never be forgotten. Their Lives Matter. Within China, the government has suppressed the memory of Tiananmen so effectively that young people have either no awareness of this massacre, or consider it a Western fabrication. For their own survival, the Mothers and Fathers and Brothers and Sisters in China who will always remember, are forced to deny the existence of a loved one who was murdered there. For justice, dignity and hope, The Challenge: Tiananmen Square is a symphony that unites the vibrations of those who perished with the people of today who refuse to forget. The future forward is justice. The future is to remember.

Jason Kao Hwang is a significant figure as composer violinist and violist known as an important improviser and conductor. In 2015 his octet Burning Bridge performed at the International Festival Musique Actuelle (Canada), quintet Sing House performed at the Vision Festival and his symphony, The Challenge: Tiananmen Square, premiered at Lehman College and commissioned by the Multi-Cultural Music. His recording, East Village will be released this fall and “Voice”, a cd of his music for texts by poets Fay Chiang, Patricia Spears Jones, Steve Dalachinsky, Yuko Otomo and Lester Affleck. In 2012 the Downbeat voted him “Rising Star for Violin.”
