a literary journal published by the Black Earth Institute dedicated to re-forging the links between art and spirit, earth and society
Susan Deer Cloud, a mixed lineage Catskill Native, dwells among wild birds, wild animals, wild land, and wild storytellers. The recipient of an NEA Literature Fellowship and two New York State Foundation for the Arts Poetry Fellowships, her writing has been published in numerous journals and anthologies. Her most recent books are Hunger Moon, Before Language, and The Way to Rainbow Mountain. She has often said she could not live in a place without rivers, and thankfully her beloved “heart country” has many rivers, creeks and lakes. She has traveled “out West” several times in her life, beginning with the first time she went cross-country in 1975 and eventually lived in Taos, New Mexico from spring to autumn. She has camped in many free and enchanting places during her wanderings, including far back in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. She has written about it all.
