Can We Acknowledge? is a continuation of my series of large steel books. The interplay of positive and negative space, of image and text is important to this work. This steel accordion-book/fence has five 4-foot × 4-foot steel pages which ask, “Can we acknowledge the pain we have caused in the world, even as we struggle with our own?”
Janet Goldner makes steel sculptures and installations that include photography and video. Bridging diverse cultures, her work celebrates the unique beauty and genius of each and what we have in common. The evolution of Janet’s art traces her enduring exploration of sculptural form, her ongoing relationship with African culture, and her lifelong involvement in political activism. Janet first went to West Africa as a college undergraduate. Her year in West Africa ignited her life-long connection with the continent. Since her 1995 Fulbright Fellowship, she has traveled to Mali every year to engage in long-term collaborations with Malian artists. Over thirty years as an active artist, Janet has participated in over 20 solo exhibitions, and more than 100 group exhibitions throughout the US and internationally. She is the recipient of numerous awards, grants, and artist residencies, including 4 Fulbright Fellowships, and grants from the Ford Foundation, the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid.
