I am from a land

that is your land’s enemy—

I am hyphenated—

here—not-from-here—

citizen-outsider—

Your land stages wars on other lands—

My land is where wars descend—

Our despots butcher us for power—

You condone our tyrants

Here you raise your voice against injustice

The world hears you

Death is the least painful reward

for our struggle

The world does not hear us

Freedom is not freedom

if it is only your freedom

If the enemy of your enemy

is your friend

count freedom as your enemy—
