The Haitian Princess
 
A Vodou princess sits upon the mountain
Dressed in green
Her legs stretched wide
Reach to the horizon
As waters swell within her fertile womb
Her soul dances
To the song of the whistling frog
And laughs with its ventriloquist colleague
Creating a tapestry of music
In seven note chirps
Long and distant
Thrown like gossamer petals
Above her green
Mountain
Tresses
Looped
In orchid dreadlocks
 
 
 
Karen Melander-Magoon I have been writing poetry since I learned to read, and was published as a child, but only now am reaching out again to ask that my voice be heard. I spent my professional years singing major roles in opera in Europe and later singing jazz, writing and performing one-woman operas about Clara Barton, Georgia O’Keeffe and Lillie Langtry; my musical “Colette” has yet to be performed.
