Susan M. Botich

Susan Botich

Newborn

Resting
on the maple’s breast,
slowly raising, lowering
her wings,
patterned translucent,
she waits.

She’d won
life, its becoming,
cocooned inside a weave
of night.
Now the newborn listens.
Stillness

opens
sky and she begins
again. Turning, turning,
her wings
sing whispers through dawn,
turning,

turning,
until wind’s breath
chants the annual spring prayer:
Leave that
chrysalis to the branch
quiver.
